Historical Walking Tour / Stuffed Animal Petting Zoo 2016

On 16, Dec 2016 | In News | By The S.A.R.F.

Dear Friends,

It is once again the time of year when I mow down the tall, weed-laden pasture of excuses to reveal the lush green field of stuffed animal-related hi-jinx that’s been gasping for air underneath.

Today, it is with great joy and relief that I reveal to you a portion of that pasty garden of creativity in the form of two projects, both of which require the help of YOUR eyeballs to beam metaphorical chlorophyll and sunshine in their directions to give them, symbolically speaking, the healthy tans they need to coax The SARF back from its extended hibernation.

Here they are:

1. There is now a Stuffed Animal-Related Historical Walking Tour of the North University Area, culminating in a visit to…

2. The Annual 37th Street Stuffed Animal Petting Zoo, 2016… Read more…

Are You Guys Still in Business, Or WHAT??

On 31, May 2016 | In News | By The S.A.R.F.

the-sarf-apologiesWell, it’s that time of year again: the time when we apologize for our lack of activity and we lament our perpetually-unpaid intern’s lack of fingers typing inefficiencies and forth. So here goes.

Yes, The SARF is still in business. We’ve just been on hiatus, that’s all.

December was great. We sold things at Blue Genie, and we had our largest and most successful adoption campaign to date! In January, we delivered all of our adopted SAs to their new homes.

In February… we crashed.

And then it was May.

BUT we do have some exciting things planned, including a super fun partnership with Austin Bat Cave this summer, which is going to be AWESOME, and a very risky and potentially-controversial surgery involving two of our koala residents, a partnership with (or investigation by) PETSA (People For The Ethical Treatment of Stuffed Animals), and- from the deepest darkest depths of our most unreasonable predictions- maybe even a podcast!

So hang in there :)

We get a WHOLE LOT of applications, and unfortunately we can’t award an SA to everyone who applies. But please don’t give up! We will have more SAs up for adoption very soon!

Do Stuffed Fish Have Feelings?

On 19, Nov 2015 | In News, Successful Placements | By The S.A.R.F.

Of course! Although Kelly’s stoicism  during her tagging surgery did have me wondering…

Perhaps it’s all the adrenaline, as she’s preparing for the trip to her new home, quite appropriately, across the pond.

This morning, Kelly’s shipping out to meet her new living companion, Sophie, all the way over in the U.K.

Congrats, Sophie. She will see you soon!

An Important SARF Spa Announcement!

On 18, Nov 2015 | In News, Spa News, The SARF Spa | By The S.A.R.F.

Dear Friends!

Due to overwhelming response, The SARF Spa is not accepting new patients at this time. We are temporarily disabling our repair estimate form while we catch up on our already-scheduled repairs. Our turnaround time is currently well over a month, which we feel is a bit long to keep SAs from their homes.

My Personal Essay: A Monkey Forever

On 29, Oct 2015 | In Spa Creative Writing Stories | By The S.A.R.F.

Monkey Puff
The SARF Creative Writing Class I

The bear looked at me and said, “How are your preparations going?”

“I’m not quite sure what you mean?” I replied.

I was confused. He was a stranger and couldn’t have possibly known that Muffy and I were in the thick of planning our beach destination wedding, and that my Muffy, dear as she is, had been rather stressed. Nor could he have known that this was putting the first (and heretofore only) bit of strain on our then still-new whirlwind love affair.

“Hibernation,” the bear replied. “Is your den ready? I just finished up a new room for my cubs, and seeing as how it’s already getting cool in the mornings, I’d say I finished just in time!”

“Oh! Hibernation!” I said. “Well, you see, monkeys don’t actually hibernate,” I told him.

“Of course they don’t!” the said, indignantly. “But what does that have to do with the gosh-darn price of honey in San Antonio?”

“You do realize that’s what I am, don’t you? I’m a monkey…”

“Ridiculous!” the bear said. “You’re no more a monkey than I am!

The bear turned around and stuck out his rump, revealing a small, round, stump of a tail.

“Come on,” he said. “Show me! Yours is even smaller than mine is, I’ll bet. Let’s see that tail, little bear,” he chided.

“Listen,” I told him. “I am a monkey through-and-through, and there’s nothing you or I or anyone else could do to change that! Tail or no tail, trees or no trees, it’s just who I am, Mr. Bear. Now you move along and get ready for your hibernation! I’ve got a wedding to plan!”

“Well, excuse me!!” said the bear indignantly, though I could tell he was impressed by my confidence. “Suit yourself.”

And with that, I went home to Muffy to calm her nerves and to discuss the remaining details of our upcoming nuptials. She was very glad to welcome her favorite monkey home.
