Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
After receiving my B.A. in engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, I decided that the regimented engineering world simply didn’t suit my playful nature. I am quite interested in principles of balance, form, and structure, but I prefer to use these for self-expression. My soft kinetic mobiles are whimsical abstract representations of animals, plants, and other semi-recognizable objects.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
I use common stuffed animal parts to create my art. This piece is a representation of an eclipse, pictured on a series of stuffed animal eye expressions. Ironically, stuffies can look directly at an eclipse, whereas humans cannot. This piece serves a dual-illustration of a stuffy’s experience of this cosmological event.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
I struggle with time. My art is about this struggle.
These small bottles contain dyed material representations of time itself. Bits of polyester batting were placed in a dye bath and removed in five-minute intervals. Collected and preserved in glass, the subtle color shifts you see create a concrete visual illustration of time passing.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
I explore the transformative power of art, tapping into pure feeling through abstract usage of soft media typically used to create entities such as myself. By constructing compositions with primordial stuffy materials, I afford the viewer an opportunity to look deeper into the realm of the stuffed animal. The viewer is just that: merely a viewer. The material is soft to the eyes, but there is a barrier. One can look but cannot touch. This creates a spiritual longing that illustrates the complex spiritual relationship between a stuffy and its living companion.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
Look around you. The vast majority of the stuffies you see are 100% plastic. Polyester, to be exact. We are made of petroleum: myself included. Some of my critics have argued that my art is a form of self-hate. This is far from the case. I am simply bringing attention to the fact that stuffed animal overpopulation/over-purchasing isn’t just a matter of running out of space on one’s bed. Over the last several decades, stuffies have shifted from natural materials to polyester, and the cost of purchasing stuffies has plummeted. This has contributed to the problem of stuffy overpopulation and homelessness that The Stuffed Animal Rescue Foundation is attempting to combat. Stuffed animal quality has also plummeted. Important note: I am only speaking of physical quality, not emotional, intellectual, or moral quality. I simply encourage my viewers to think twice before impulse-purchasing a new stuffy from a grocery store- especially when there are so many homeless stuffies in need.

I received my MFA in sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design in 2010. Since then, I have been working with folded and pleated fabric to create dynamic pieces that convey movement, balance, and flow.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
Being a stuffed animal can be challenging. The world is made for humans. Things are high off the ground. We are typically quite short. I use my photography to bring attention to the plight of a small stuffy in a big world. My photos show the world from my perspective.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
As a stuffed penguin living in the southwest, I have always been fascinated by the stark-yet-colorful landscapes of the desert. After completing my MFA in 2019, I spent the next two years living in a trailer near Monument Valley where I developed my technique, incorporating abstract penguin shapes (beaks, flippers, tails) into the flowing, organic palette of my surroundings.

Stuffed Artist’s Statement:
As an artist, my mind tends to wander. I find myself staring at the night sky quite a bit, finding my own patterns and pictures in the stars, much like our ancient ancestors did. I create my own observed constellations using thread and board, thus communicating my own personal relationship to the universe.
